Researching one’s family tree has become a popular pastime and often a consuming passion for those who embark on such a journey. Since 2006, the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project has assisted those researching their family history here in Alberta. Radomir Bilash, the Project’s manager, will look at the typical needs that individuals have when conducting Ukrainian genealogy work and explain how the Project has responded to these needs. Please join us for a engaging look at how to dig up the past!

The Alberta Ukraine Genealogical Project was established with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Province of Alberta and Lviv Oblast in 2006.  Since that time, it has provided guidance, research information, and user -friendly research aids to thousands of family history enthusiasts in Alberta and beyond.  Now entering its third three-year phase, the Project is in the process of sharing its materials through a website that will continue to assist those interested in Ukrainian and Albertan genealogy for many years to come.

As well as serving as Project Manager of the Alberta-Ukraine Genealogical Project, Radomir Bilash is Senior Historian at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village east of Edmonton and National Historian appointed by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in 2011. He is also an adjunct associate professor at the University of Alberta. Mr. Bilash is president of the Canadian Association of Ukrainian Ethnology and a member of the Canadian Association of Slavists, the Edmonton & District Historical Society and the Edmonton Heritage Council. He is the author of numerous articles and presentations pertaining to Ukrainian-Canadian culture and history.
