UCPBA Outstanding Award Recipient & Speaker
UCPBA Calgary is thrilled to announce that our 2015 Outstanding Award recipient is former premier Ed Stelmach. A native of Andrew, Alberta, Mr. Stelmach studied at the University of Alberta before returning to his home town to run the family farm. His political career started with participation in local politics, as a member of county council and as reeve. First elected to the Alberta legislature in 1993, Ed Stelmach served as premier of our province from 2006 to 2011. Mr. Stelmach will reflect on his years of public service in this Province, including especially the period during which he served as Premier. He will also offer his thoughts on the dramatic transformation of Alberta’s political landscape with the surprise election of this Province’s first NDP government and the simultaneous collapse of the 44 year old Conservative dynasty.
UCPBA Lifetime Award Recipients
UCPBA Calgary is particularly proud to present the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award to Oksana and Oleh Hnatiuk, longtime members of UCPBA. A veritable P’s & B’s power couple, both have served terms as presidents of UCPBA chapters – Oleh in Edmonton and Oksana in Calgary. Oksana, a founding member of the Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations established by the Government of Alberta, is also a former president of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, Calgary Branch. During her tenure, she succeeded in getting all Ukrainian organizations in Calgary to work together to stage the largest production that the community has ever undertaken – Glorious and Free – an accomplishment of which she is particularly proud. Oleh, a former president of the Ukrainian Canadian Students’ Union SUSK at U of A, extended the scope of his community involvement to the international arena. As a venture capitalist, he was able to contribute his expertise to the development of Ukraine’s investment industry in the early days of the country’s independence. Together and separately, Oleh and Oksana have had a profound impact on the Ukrainian community locally, nationally and internationally. We salute them!
