Corporal Filip Konowal of the 47th (British Columbia) Battalion of the 4th Canadian Division of the Canadian Expeditionary Force was awarded the Victoria Cross by King George “V” for conspicuous bravery and leadership in the Battle of Hill 70 – near Lens in the north of France between the Canadian Army Corps and five divisions of the German 6th Army. He led several attacks against German machine gun emplacements single-handedly killing 16 enemy soldiers in hand to hand combat until sustaining a serious injury from a sniper’s bullet. In personally bestowing the award upon Konowal King George stated, “Your exploit is one of the most daring and heroic in the history of my army.” Not only was Konowal the first and only person born in Ukraine to ever win the Victoria Cross, he was the first and only person in all of Eastern Europe to have won this award.
